the aftermath

a trip through town with an elderly black taxi driver who has lived there his whole life

a truly fascinating and humbling experience

ask me for Earl’s number if you ever head to The Big Easy

Katrina

he watched as this street became a river

Katrina hit, they were never completed.

he was (understandably) extremely bitter about this.  perfectly good housing he said.

they are taking the opportunity to make the area ‘nicer’

breeched levees.

beginning to understand the how.

(remember the homes near the lake)

where some doctors and lawyers lived.  the water got them too he said

you are supposed to demolish if you do.

I was relatively prepared to see the destruction,

what truly got to me was the sheer acreage.

vast, vast swaths of the city just wiped out.

and years later, still ...

well, we can talk about that offline.

oh yeah,

there was entertainment too...
